The SmartDoor unlocks via a battery-powered flap after reading the distinctive signal of a SmartKey worn on your pet's collar using radio-frequency technology. The flap automatically locks back into place when the SmartDoor no longer detects your pet's SmartKey.

The fully locked mode and unlocked mode are the other two modes of operation for the SmartDoor, which can detect up to five programmed SmartKeys. A pet cannot enter or exit in locked mode, although all pets may do so in unlocked mode.
