It is a little tree with a 0.5 m trunk diameter and a height of 15-20 m. (exceptionally to 30 m tall and 2 m diameter in very old trees). The foliage grows in flat sprays and has 2-4 mm long, scale-like leaves. The cones have 6-12 thick scales grouped in opposite pairs, are 15?25 mm long, and turn brown after eight months from pollination. The 4-6 mm long seeds have no wings.
