Magnolia family small to medium-sized evergreen tree, growing to a height of 8 meters (26ft). The axillary flowers are yellow, and the leaves are lanceolate. The tree is mostly grown from seed for export and domestic markets in China and Japan. Before they ripen, the fruits are picked and sun-dried. It tastes and smells a lot like the more popular anise (Pimpinella anisum), which has been used since the Roman era.
